Winthrop Upsets Kirkland; Dudley Tops Dunster, 13-7

Winthrop House hammered out a 6 to 0 victory over defending champion Kirkland yesterday afternoon on Soldiers Field to open the House football season. Across the sidelines, Dudley dumped an under-manned Dunster team, 13 to 7.

The Puritans, taking advantage of a 25-yard run by sophomore halfback Frank Hernberg, ploughed across from the three yard line early in the second period. Kirkland tried to rally behind the passing of Hal French, but its drive to the Winthrop three was squelched by the half-time whistle.

Dudley's veteran halfback, Dave Gilbert, cut off-tackle for an 80-yard run to open the scoring, and preserved the win with a 20-yard touchdown pass. Dunster's Murray Pearlstein accounted for his team's lone score with a 40-yard sprint.

This afternoon, Adams' single-wing out-fit will meet Lowell's T-formation. Eliot and Leverett will also clash, both using the single-wing. Adams and Lowell will field heavy lines, but the Gold Coasters will have the edge in experience. Leverett, a fast team, plays flashy Eliot.
