In its own conspicuous, hard-working way, the Varsity golf them has gone and got itself the prettiest-looking record of any College team playing this season. M.I.T., Bowdoin, Williams, Amherst and B.U. have dropped by the fairway-side in successive strokes, giving the Crimson duffers a nice little shooting average of 1.000.

For a team that has had to start from scratch, after three years of hit-or-miss or even no competition, under a coach who is fathering a Harvard links squad for the first time, and challenged by weather that Coach Bill Barclay unqualifiedly calls "plain miserable,"--for such a team, a perfect scorecard is nothing short of miraculous.

Despite the rain, the wind, and the bitter cold, which have messed up playing conditions for at least three matches--sweating out 36 holes in the wet is no fun--some creditably low tallies have been registered. Tyke Wilcox, lead-off man in the links lineup, has climbed down dangerously close to par, with two 75s, a 76, and 79 to his credit. Ed Egan hit Williams with a 76, and Bill Rickenbacker, Sam Savidge, and Walter Robb have also broken into the wonderful 70s. These five, in addition to Bob Orr, Lincoln Kinnicutt, John Noble, Walt Butler, Joe Gordon, Larry Gray, and Ozzie Keiver make up a sizable squad of golfers, all of whom have played in at least one match, and all of whom create a headache for Coach Barclay.

"I'd just like to be able to find out who the best six are," the boss said yesterday. He'll have to make up his mind before Friday, when the New England playoffs for the Eastern Intercollegiate Tourney take place. According to Barclay, Holy Cross will be the team to beat, and if the Crimson succeeds in doing that, it will be ready to step into the Eastern finals.

A proposed match with Yale remains in doubt, pending the fortunes of the Blue and the Crimson in the Eastern championships. If the match is not played off as a non-tourney event, last Monday's victory over B.U. will stand as the last individual encounter of the season, and the Crimson's present spotless record will stand untouched.
