Four House football teams open the 1949-1950 drive for the Straus Trophy at 3:15 p.m. today at Soldiers Field. Kirkland will be defending its title against Winthrop while Dudley takes on Dunster.
The Deacons will be depending on quarterback Hol French and four other veterans of last fall's crack team to keep their single-wing attack moving. Coach "Tank" Langdale isn't overly worried about his "new line," and his team is two deep in every position. Half of last year's championship first-stringers have returned for this season.
Winthrop Boasts Good Line
Winthrop hopes to bottle up Kirkland's power plays with a rugged veteran line. The Puritans, who finished third last fall, have a well-balanced team and may be able to match the Deacon attack with their own version of the single-wing.
Employing a T formation, Dudley is relying on speedster Dave Gilbert from last year's eleven and three freshman backs to baffle Dunster linemen. Defensively, the Commuters' Coach Barney Curtain has a light but fast line to work with.
Dunster Best in Backfield
Dunster will operate with a single-wing and a balanced line against Dudley. Coach Hughes thinks he has "a pretty fair backfield" in Tom Price, Murray Pearlstein, and Ed Viola, but there is little depth along the line.
Tomorrow's schedule has Adams, with ten first stringers returning, meeting an equally experienced Lowell House squad. This will be another single wing versus T contest. Leverett, with a pair of good passers, plays Eliot, runner up in the House League race last year.
The intramural football season will continue through November 18 when the Houses close at Yale.
