Jack Barnaby's varsity squash players get one of their rare workouts of the reading and exam periods at 5:30 p.m. this afternoon when they meet the University Club at Hemenway Gym in a metropolitan squash league match.
With major intercollegiate competition shelved until February, the Crimson will have to be content with games in the tougher metropolitan league, largely composed of local clubs whose playing resters list many former eastern college squash greats.
Although the University Club has one-time stars of Brown, Dartmouth, Holy Cross, and MIT in its ranks, it, like the current Crimson varsity, is somewhat obscured by such teams as the Harvard Club and Union Boat Club. As a result, Coach Barnaby expects a "close and interesting" match.
The Harvard Club, current league leaders, is led by Don Cornish, ranking state player and captain of the Crimson in 1933, and by Dave Mittel, who also is goalie coach of the current varsity hockey team. The Union Boat Club has so many champions and ex-champions that it enters three "A" teams in the league.
Tough Intercollegiate Matches
Intercollegiate play picks up again in February, when the Crimson swings into the only really tough portion of the winter's schedule. Coming up are battles with traditionally strong Army, Penn, Princeton, and Yale.
In its pre-vacation meeting with Williams on December 18, the Crimson staged a three-way sweep: the varsity and freshmen taking 9 to 0 shutouts, and the jayvees winning 6 to 1.
