Local movie theater pressure has forced the Liberal Union Film Series to drop two films from its Spring program. The status of a third is still in doubt.
RKO Radio Pictures, Inc. informed the HLU Film Series committee that its showings were competing with local theaters. Therefore they will not release "The Informer" and "Room Service" for local 16mm projection.
According to RKO officials, distributors of films for the HLU series, the showings were competing with Cambridge Theaters. Contracts between theaters and distributors state that the latter will not release prints to non-theatrical 16mm enterprises.
Roy F. Gootenberg '49, former HLU president, stated last night that the group would seek legal aid to determine whether or not the two groups are acting under a collusive arrangement.
Gootenberg said that HLU has asked United World Films whether they would release "Odd Man Out," contracted for last fall. The University Theater management, has protested the showings as competition to both RKO and United World.
Gootenberg also announced that the HLU had tentatively planned to substitute "Grand Illusion," "The Ghost Goes West," and the "Stone Flower." The spring programs will also feature resumees of football seasons of several past years.
