Lowell Downs Deacon Five; Dunster Wins

By John R.W. Smail

House basketball came to a pre-exam end with three games yesterday, Lowell beating Kirkland 30 to 28, Dunster beater Eliot 41 to 33, and Adams edging Leverett 42 to 41, while hockey opened a pre-exam series with Winthrop downing Lowell 5 to 1.

Lowell followed its usual give-them-a-big-lead-and-then-pull-the string procedure with Kirkland. They played a casual first period, shooting seldom and with little accuracy, guarding lackadaisically, while the Deacons amassed a seemingly unbeatable lead of 14 points, 20 to 6, on the pivot shots and rebounds of Pat McCormick and the field work and set shooting of John Pankey.

Lowell Recovers

Then, the veteran Bellboy team gathered itself and, led by sparkplug Goldie Goldsmith, began calmly and smoothly to overtake the fast-tiring and worried Kirkland five. The turning point came then Goldsmith stole the ball twice in succession and laid it up for scores. After that, Lowell turned on the pressure and won going away, Goldsmith getting points. It was the fifth straight victory for Lowell, and Kirkland's third less against two wins. Kirkland walked off with the B league game, 34 to 24.

Farewell Game

Center John Brungman, playing his just game before graduation, led Dunster to an easy, fast-breaking win over Eliot's one-man (Bob Crichton) team. Grunsman, who had led Dunster to two championships, scored 11 points, as Dunster recorded its fourth league win to Eliot's second defeat. Dunster also won the B League game.

First Win

Adams won its first game of the season against Leverett, but had to come from behind in a close game. In the last minute Frank Holt scored for the Gold-coasters to put them ahead, 41 to 40, and a foul shot for each team didn't change the issue. The game dumped the Bunnies into a last-place tie with Adams each with a 1-4 record. Adams '50 won the B League game, 29 to 18.

The lone hockey game was a substantial triumph for the Winthrop Skaters, particularly Hans Estin, who forced two goals and Jim Ward, who shot three. The Puritans are undefeated in House hockey, while Lowell as lost two and won one.
