Army Claims Chief Boston As Assistant Football Coach

One of the most popular of Crimson coaches signed a contract with Army Saturday. Clarence "Chief" Boston '39, Jayvee football and Varsity wrestling coach, will serve as an assistant Varsity football coach to Red Blaik at West Point for the 1948 season, starting on July 1 when his Harvard contract expires.

"Everyone at Harvard has treated me wonderfully," Boston said last night, "and my sole reason for leaving is that the position at Army seems a better opportunity."

Neither William J. Bingham '16, director of the H.A.A., nor football coach Arthur Valpey was available for comment last night, but both knew of Boston's impending departure, since negotiations were conducted according to the standard practice, which requires Bingham's permission.

Although he helped Valpey with Spring practice, Boston said that he definitely would not scout Harvard for the October 16 Army game, as that is a "matter of coaching ethics." "What information I picked up at Spring practice will not be compromised." He added that Blaik had agreed, pointing out that Army has played the Michigan system twice anyway.

"Blaik said he hired me because of my coaching record; what success I've had, I owe to the Jayvees."

At West Point, Boston will serve, along with John Sauer, as a replacement for departed backfield coach Andy Gustafson, but probably will not do anything with wrestling. "I regret leaving the wrestling team which now seems to be the major minor sport at College," he said. "Blaik wanted to know if I could skate."
