Eisenhower Tells HYRC He's Still Not A Candidate

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

National "Students for Eisenhower" organizing efforts by HLU President Frederic D. Houghteling '50 and others will go for naught, Young Republican President William L. Rusher 2L declared yesterday, disclosing he personally received telegraphic disclaimer of the General's candidacy this weekend.

Rusher had wired: "We urge you either to reiterate your previous statement or to announce your availability in ample time for consideration by the Republican National Convention."

"General Eisenhower . . . deeply appreciates the interest which prompted you to contact him." Major Robert L. Schuls, Alde, replied. "He has asked me to tell you, however, that his position is absolutely unchanged. He feels that after leaving the Army he can best serve the country as a private citizen in a non-political capacity."

Last night Houghteling said that "a groundswell of genuine popular demand" could definitely induce Eisenhower to run in the spirit of service to country.

Inauguration of the University Students for Eisenhower drive will take place today at 5 o'clock in Little Hall, Houghteling added. He urged attendance of "all students who wish to work for the nomination of Eisenhower on the Democratic things."
