Geoff Helps Defeat Dad

Geoff Tootell, number one Varsity shotputter, discarded family allegiance momentarily last Saturday in the Stadium when he won his event and picked up five important points against the team his father coaches. Plus 25 in the field events offset a minus 17 in the running events to give the Crimson a 74 to 66 win. The defeat was Rhode Island's first in 12 years of dual competition.

When Tootell's father asked him why he hadn't done better in the discus, Geoff said, "I just didn't want to make it look too bad for you, dad."

In the former event, Varsity sprinter Harvey Thayer hit 22 feet to win, and George Kumpel got second. For the second straight Saturday, a chilly wind swirled down into the Stadium--so gusty at times that the high jump crossbars had to be held in place by officials until the jumpers left the ground. The H.A.A. is hoping for a better break this Saturday.
