American aid to Europe must extend to "the fields of defense" as well as to economic support, General DeGaulle yesterday told a rally in Compiegue, France. He made the statement in a speech calling upon the Western European nations to join with the United States in opposing Communism and the spread of Soviet influence.

In the small Czechoslovakian town in Liberce, officials yesterday took the first move toward merging the country's Communist and Social Democratic parties into a "Worker's Unity Party." The action committee of the town's Social Democratic party asked the group's national headquarters to let them join forces with the Communists. Similar mergers elsewhere in Eastern Europe have marked the disappearance of the social Democrats.

The United States will seek big-power agreement on the Palesthein crisis when talks begin today, a delegation member said last night. The consultations were proposed Friday by the Security Council, which asked the Big Five to bring back recommendations on the Holy Laud problem by March 15.
