HLU Hears UMT Hit as War Step

Calling UMT a direct read toward war." Judge Lawrence G. Brooks '02 chairman of the Boston Branch of the Foreign Policy Association, told the Harvard Liberal Union last night that new methods of warfare have made large standing armies obsolete.

John J. Wright, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston, gave the Catholic view of UMT, stating that it neither prevents war nor gives young men the spiritual and moral training they need.

"European rulers," he said, "told their people that UMT would make for a strong citizenry and nation, yet Germany repeatedly attacked conscript nations." Wright saw a possibility that UMT might develop into the militarism which "has been a contributing force to the downfall of civilizations which practiced it."

Wright conceded that some military force is necessary if we are to be prepared for an emergency.
