President Conant will testify before the Senate Armed Services Committee today in Washington in favor of Universal Military Training. Yesterday Don S. Willner '47, president of Students for Democratic Action, presented to the committee student non-Communist opposition to the proposal in behalf of SDA.
Although 10 of the 13 senators in the group have reportedly been convinced of the necessity for UMT since Monday, Willner attacked UMT as the wrong way to achieve a strong war potential.
Quoting Einstein, Eisenhower, and official Army reports to prove that the trainees would not be ready to join the army as effective fighting men until months after a modern war would be over, Willner called for a stronger air force and greatly expanded research in scientific warfare.
He put the SDA on record as opposed to the Wallace attitude that UMT would be a threat to world peace.
