Grad Forum Tonight Offers Debate Over Social Sciences

Elliott, Kluckhohn Tangle Over "Fact and Value"

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

William Yandell Elliott, Leroy B. Williams Professor of Government, will tangle with Clyde M. Kluckhohn, professor of Anthropology, in tonight's Graduate Forum discussion of "Fact and Value in the Social Sciences," in New Lecture Hall at 8 o'clock.

Termed by its moderator, Payson S. Wild, dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, "one of the most important meetings of the year," the forum is expected to revolve around the issue of goals and values versus the fact-gathering approach. Elliott will defend the former, Kluckhohn the latter.

Sponsored by the Graduate Advisory Council, tonight's program is billed as "an experiment in interdepartmental communication--a kind of general education at the graduate level."

Finance Contest

Gate receipts from the Elliott-Kluckhohn duel will go towards financing prizes in the Graduate Forum's $150 contest on "What the Social Sciences Most Need."

Open to all officially registered students at Harvard and Radcliffe--except Grad Forum members--the contest calls for submission of a 1,500-word essay to the Forum at Farlow House 24 Quincy Street, by Monday, April 5.

First prize in the competition is a cash award of $100. Runner-ups get one prize of $25 in books and three prizes of $10 in books in order of finish.
