Yale Mermen Win Intercollegiates As Verdeur Smashes Two Records

LaSalle's Joe Verdeur cracked the official world's record in the 200-yard breaststroke and the American record in the 300-yard individual medley to win individual honors in Saturday's half of the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming meet. As expected, Yale walked off with team honors in the invitation meet, held at the Indoor Athletic Building pool.

Verdeur set both his records in the afternoon's time trials, plowing the waves in 2:16.1 in the breaststroke and in 3:22.8 in the medley. In the evening's finals, he won both events easily.

The summary:

300-yard individual medley: Won by Verdeur (LaSalle); second Gabey (Merchant Marine Academy); third, Despres North Carolina Univ.); fourth, McMullen (Yale); fifth, Soltysiak (Bowdoin). Winning time--3:36.9.

100-yard freestyle: Won by Broadbent (Yale); second, Girdes (Yale); third, Irwin (Army); fourth, Hill (Cornell); fifth, Freed (Yale); sixth, Twining (North Carolina Univ.). Winning time--.53.

200-yard breaststroke: Won by Verdeur (LaSalle); second, Schmidt (Temple); third, DeForrest (Penn.); fourth, Urstadt (Dartmouth); fifth, Brier (Brown); sixth, D'Arcy (Temple). Winning time--2:16.9.

440-yard freestyle: Won by Moore (Yale); second, Reid (Williams); third, German (Harvard); fourth, Parker (Yale); fifth, Lambert (Williams); sixth, Arthur (Harvard). Winning time--4:56.3.

Three-meter dive: Won by Heston (Yale); second, Fergusan (Yale); third, Drohan (Harvard); fourth, Flynn (Rutgers); fifth, Frazler (Penn.); sixth, Sevilia (Springfield). Winner's points--122.33.

400-yard freestyle relay: Won by Yale; second, Rutgers; third, North Carolina; fourth, Williams; fifth, Harvard; sixth, Army. Winning team's time--3:34.8.
