Yale's great backstroker, Allen Stack, and Joe Verduer, world-champion butterfly specialist, from LaSalle, hooked up in the 300-yard medley relay at the Blockhouse last night and the result brought a crowd of 1500 to their feet roaring, as the first day of the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming Championships ended.
Stack, national collegiate champion, who had cruised to an easy 150-yard backstroke win a couple of hours earlier, jumped the Elis out to a full five second lead on the first leg, but then Verdued took over and on the butterfly leg pulled to within a foot of Yale's Joe Seldon. By this time, the jammed house, weary from watching Yale sweep to three firsts and a second in the first four events on the card, was yelling for LaSalle. Jack Lumsden, LaSalle freestyler, finally nailed Don Irwin in the final three yards and won by about half a foot.
Only Varsity man to place in yesterday's action was Tom Drohan, who took fourth in the low dive, despite a bandaged hand which he bruised earlier yesterday.
Tickets for the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming matches, on sale in the Indoor Athletic Building, will cost 75 cents for general admission to the 2:15 o'clock session and $1.50 for reserved seats for 7:15 o'clock tonight. HAA coupons will not be accepted.
