Economy Savants Approve Controls To Curb Inflation

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Ten top economists reached substantial agreement" on measures for fighting inflation in a symposium conducted by the Economics Department this weekend for its publication, The Review of Economic Statistics.

Most of the experts agreed on controls to check the "excessive demand that still threatens a disastrous inflation," but they divided sharply on the degree of controls to be imposed. A few opposed any controls whatever.

Participants from the University included Seymour E. Harris '20, Professor of Economics; Summer H. Slichter, Lamont University Professor; and Gottfried Haberler, Warburg Professor of Economics.

Summing up the various analyses, Professor Harris said, "The case for anti-inflation measures is as strong as ever, despite recent changes in commodity markets."
