City Still Plowing Winter's Snows at Cost of $800,000

Digging out from the worst accumulation of snow in years will cost Boston and Cambridge almost $800,000, Public Works offices disclosed yesterday, as workers continued day and night at the seemingly endless task of clearing city streets.

Not only have the recurring snowfalls kept plow-crews constantly on the go since Christmas, but they will necessitate an extensive road repair program this spring, Cambridge Public Works Commissioner William McMeuimen said.

Tractors and chains on heavy snow-clearing trucks have ripped up streets everywhere. Although 500 tons of asphalt patch have already been poured on Cambridge streets, this is far short from the actual needs.
