Valpey Picks Two Assistant Grid Coaches

Art Valpey named two assistants to the Crimson football coaching hierarchy last night when he announced that Forest Russell ("Butch") Jordan would be his line coach and David Nelson his back-field aide.

Like Valpey, who was named head coach only two weeks ago, both new assistants are Michigan graduates. Jordan, 34-year old assistant line coach of the Michigan varsity eleven for the last two years, played guard and tackle for three years while an undergraduate.

Nelson Teammate of Harmon

Nelson, age 30, played three years of football, basketball, and baseball while in college and, in 1940, played wingback in the same backfield with All-America Tom Harmon. He has served as athletic director and head football coach at Hillsdale College, Michigan, for the last two years where his terms ran up a string of 15 consecutive victories.

Valpey announced from his Ann Arbor home that he would select his end coach in a few days.

Hal Kopp, Bob Margarita, and Harry Jacunski, assistant coaches under Dick Harlow last fall, have received no offers of other jobs as yet.

Henry Lamar, freshman grid coach, and Chief Boston, jayvee mentor, hold contracts with the H.A.A. which run out in July. According to Director of Athletics William J. Bingham '16, "it's up to Art" whether or not he plans to keep them next year. Valpey declared that he "wants to get a look at" the pair before making any decision.
