Cracked skis, broken harnesses, and untimely falls submerged the Crimson ski team to eighth place among the ten crack teams poling for north-eastern U. S. collegiate ski honors in the Dartmouth Carnival at Hanover this weekend.
Bill Wasserman took seventh in the slalom, the only notable place secured by the team among the fields of over forty competing in each event. A spill at the last gate of his second run knocked Gerry Genn out of a probable fourth place in this event.
In the gruelling nine mile cross country trek, Captain Graham Taylor split his ski near the starting string. He succeeded in finishing the race, but came in far behind Skiddy Lund, unacquainted with cross-country slats until this year, who finished 22nd for the Crimson.
Griffin Nineteenth In Downhill
To add to the hard luck which battered at the skiers hopes all weekend, Laurie Griffin's front throw on his cable broke at the top of the downhill course. Sans hammer or screw-driver, Griffin pushed the throw into the ski, tightened his bindings in the hope that tension would keep the harness intact, and copped 19th place. His time of 79 seconds was eight behind the winner.
Dee Bogert, the only Harvard skier not to spill on one of his two jumps. went the distance for an eighteenth place in the jumping competition.
Sunday, at the Concord jumping championships, the Crimson revived, made a treaty with lady luck, and beat the field of over forty contestants on the 30 meter jump. Griffin, who fell at Dartmouth, won the day with flights of 103 and 101 feet, while Coach Bill Halsey took third and Genn fourth.
Although it has not definitely been determined in H.A.A. circles where the ski team will be schussing in subsequent weeks, they may travel to the Norwich Winter Carnival for competition this weekend.
