Varsity Wrestlers Favored to Beat Wesleyan in Debut at Blockhouse

By Peter B. Taub

If Wesleyan's wrestling team were as sharp as its football team, Dan Ray and his seven Crimson cronies have just cause for alarm in this afternoon's home opener. However, the men from Middletown are even worse off than they were last year when they were smothered under a 32-0 score by the grapplers. The festivities get started at 3 p.m. in the Blockhouse wrestling room, with the freshmen engaging their Wesleyan counterparts simultaneously.

Because the relative strength of the two teams has gone in opposite directions since the last time they met (Wesleyan has lost its ace and Captain Frank Bowles; Harvard has gained power in the lightweight brackets while retaining its experienced heavyweights), the match is not expected to be any more searching a test of the Crimson's mat prowess than Saturday's party at MIT.

"They had a few good wrestlers," Coach Butch Jordan commented yesterday, "but we were in better condition." The same will probably hold true today.

Jones Wrestles at 155

Jordan also revealed two changes in his lineup. Dave Coombs, who was supposed to wrestle at 121 today after "making weight," lost to Joe Kozel in yesterday's tryouts and Kozel will make his second straight start.

With Bob Claflin still suffering from a sprained ankle, Don Louria will compete at 175 and Captain Ray at 165, with Sandy Jones taking over Ray's 155-pound chores. Dave Smith (128), Roger Wach (136), and Howie Houston (unlimited) round out the Crimson front line.

Only Home Match of the Term

This will be Harvard's final home meet until Feb. 12 when Army comes to town, and will also mark the first and last home appearance of Louria and Ray this year. They will face Columbia next month but will be unavailable after February graduation.

Freshman mentor John Chaffee announced one switch in his attack--Dick Farrington will replace Gene Hill at 175 with the rest of the lineup remaining constant.
