R.I. State Downs Crimson Runners In Practice Meet

Bob "Spider" Black, Rhode Island's greatest distance man, didn't run, but even without him, the Rams overpowered Jaakko Mikkola's relay teams in yesterday's informal meet in Briggs Cage.

The varsity lost both its mile and two mile events. Slow baton-passing seemed to hinder the runners' efforts. Their time for the mile was 3:30.5, with Harvey Thayer doing the fastest laps.

Freshman runners were all nervous, according to Coach Mikkola, but they showed up well. They beat the Ram mile squad with a slow 3:33.7, and they finished third in front of the varsity in the two-mile event.

Brown, a late entrant in the informal meet, won the two-mile relay, but the Bruin coach opined he "thought his team stunk." The time for the two-mile was indefinite, since no official timekeeper was available. The Crimson freshmen finished in 8:21.1, just ahead of the varsity. But Brown and Rhode Island fought the race out half a lap in front of the College quartets.

The varsity trackmen will meet BU and Northeastern at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow in a fully official track meet in Briggs Cage. The freshmen will go to Andover tomorrow to compete with a full squad of 40 men.
