College GOP Asks Rent Curbs End; For Housing Law

Harvard Young Republicans demanded removal of all rent controls last night in adopting the domestic policy section of their new 1949 platform.

The meeting also adopted a plank which called for the federal government to take a "positive constructive role" in atomic development for both war and peace, in regional flood control and water power development, and in large-scale low-cost public housing and clearance. The club felt that public housing would relieve the rent situation-without leaving the way open for unfair treatment of landlords for political reasons.

The club asked "substantial reductions" in tariffs "with adequate consideration for quotas and state monopolies in other countries. The reciprocal trade policy and participation in the International Trade Organization were also approved.

Another plank stated: "We oppose any tax reduction which would either impede national defense or produce additional Federal deficits." The club also went on record as opposing general price control laws.
