Combined Charities Net Record $23,000 Figure

Almost complete returns show that the Combined Charities Drive has raised a total of $22,781.84, Treasurer Frederick Deane '48 announced last night.

Although the drive fell short of its goal of $25,000, Deane revealed that, "according to all available records, this is the largest amount ever raised by a Harvard charity drive."

Freshmen Give Most

Freshmen gave the largest single class contribution. $8,513.58 was received from the Class of '52, although at Registration, the Yardlings had pledged almost $10,000. Deane said, however, that he is "highly gratified with the results."

More checks will probably trickle in during the next week, Deane explained, and the Drive may yet hit the $23,000 mark. Commuters' contributions, which come in by mail, will probably not be complete for several days, Deane added.

Both Phillips Brooks House and the Student Council will be able to operate with full treasuries because of the Drive's success, Deane said. The Council was scheduled to receive 30 percent, and PBH 20 percent of the total up to $20,000.
