PBH Social Service Workers plan Busy Season at Local Boy's Clubs

Almost 200 men headed Phillips Brooks House's recent call for volunteers in social service work and as a result youngsters in 47 local settlement houses and boy's clubs will have plenty of entertainment this fall, Christopher M. Martin '49, social service co-chairman, said yesterday.

The new workers, mostly upperclassmen, will bolster a present social Service Committee of 60 in spending two hours weekly at Boston youth centers directing sports, photography, science work, dramatics, music and carpentry.

Outside of these traditional PBH activities the Social Service Committee is also running ten weekly winter camping trips. Heading a campaign to install now equipment in the North Brighton Community center and directing a project to rehalf a stage in a Jamaica plain settlement house.

The season's biggest night for PBH will come just before Halloween when the Social Service Committee, aided by the Speakers and Entertainers group, will stage 20 huge parties. Singing, vaudeville, and magic, as well as cider and doughnuts will entertain settlement house crowds.

In the sporting line Varsity wrestley John H. Cassedy '50 and intra mural grappling champion James Howard '48 are planning special instruction programs.

As another phase of boys work, PBH hands out tickets in College sports events. Last Saturday N. Conant Webb '49, the special events director took 81 boys to the Freshman Holy Cross football game at the Stadium and an even large group will probably watch the Dartmouth freshman game next week.
