Kirkland and Winthrop romped around the Dunster and Leverett ends, respectively yesterday to open the Inter-House Football League season.
Kirkland turned its own fumbles into impromptu reverses for an 18 to 0 victory, while on the adjoining field, Winthrop looked better than its 7 to 6 edge would indicate.
Starting the game with a plunging "T" formation, Kirkland switched to a single wing within the first quarter and had an easy day from then on, bending the Dunster line at both ends.
Willy Thompson swung around on his left end for the first score. Quent Stiles tallied on the same type of play minutes later and passed to last year's all-House end, Joe Eaton, for the final Kirkland touchdown.
In the Winthrop squeeze over Leverett, the Deacons overcame uncooperative officialling and 65 yards of penalties to keep their small margin. The two lines were equal charge for charge, but the Bunny running attack, split between the "T" and the single wing, was no competition for the faster Puritans.
Harvey Thayer, a Varsity sprinter last spring, ran fast and far on well set up reverses to the left and behind good blocking on right end sweeps for most of the Winthrop yardage. The Bunnies made two sustained drives in the final quarter, capitalizing on Winthrop penalties, but lost the ball and the game on two unpropitious fumbles.
