Oarsmen Pull Summer's Last Mile

Two of Bert Halses summer eight oared crews put the finishing touches to an active but informal rowing season at Weld Boat Club yesterday afternoon when they fought out a half-mile duel in a misty rain on the Charles River.

Stroke Pete Hewitt's sweepswingers--although the lighter of the two boats by as much as 12 pounds per man--defeated John Carlson's heavies by a little more than a length in 3 minutes 9 seconds. Both crews were classified by Haines as "inexperienced."

Hewitt and his men also defeated a strong headwind, usually the bane of light crews, by showing better coordination and holding a higher beat than the Carlsons. Hewitt stroked 31 for most of the race, Carlson 29.

Previously, summer sculling was climaxed with the University championship finals last Friday when six classes produced their individual champions and recipients of the H. A. A. medals.

In the tightest and most expertly rowed of all six races, Joe Eldredge nosed out a former titlist, Tom Day, who finished second, and Bill Dowd, clerk of course, and Julie Eisenstein, both of whom tied for third, for the senior singles championship. Not more than a length separated all your oarsmen. Eldredge was timed in 3:15.

Getchell Wins

John Getchell clipped over the half-mile course in the second fastest winning time of the day--3:22.8--to win the junior singles. George Carpenter was second.

The ex-PT boat captain, Jim Queeny, who turned in the fastest time in the novice singles trials last week, lowered it by three and a half seconds to win his class title in 3:28.5 over John Brewer.

Only two men entered the 155-pound singles but put on a worthwhile exhibition with Dave Snow defeating Bill Sprout by three seconds in 3:59,4.

Bill Middendorf came through as expected in the compromise race by easily beating Bruce Preston in the time of 3:40. New Freshman Art Nilsson-nipped Herman Page in the wherry finals, being clocked at 3:45.
