Art Nilsson, who last Friday won the University wherry championship on the Charles, on Monday turned his aquatic attention toward the Indoor Athletic Building pool and acquired two more H.A.A. medals by winning the closed 60-yard free style and breaststroke events.
Competing in a class limited to inexperienced swimmers--mainly from Bill Brooks' summer swimming class, Nilsson was clocked in the free style event at 25.3 seconds, a tenth of a second slower than the time posted by a Varsity squad member, Steve Wise, in winning the open class race over the same distance.
Brooks ran off seven races in all Monday--six 50 yards in length and one 200 yards combining both closed and open classes.
Another Varsity Winner
Another Varsity swimmer, Hank Arthur, won the 200 yard free style in 2 minutes 20 seconds to qualify for the H.A.A. open medal in the only long distance competition, Charles Jarrold, entered in the closed division, finished second in 2 minutes 43.3 seconds and was awarded the closed medal.
In the two other open events, Phil Shutt did the 50 yards on his back in 33 seconds for the summer backstroke title and Willie Kraus, who trailed Wise in the free style, got his medal in the breaststroke with a 32 second clocking.
Norbert Kamarck captured the closed backstroke in 35.7 seconds while Nilsson's time in the breaststroke was 36.7 seconds. In both of these races, Bob Bigelow finished just out of the money.
