Fall's Freshman Class Tapers Off To Average Size

Despite a record number of applications, the total number of College entrants coming direct from high school this fall will be lightly less than average, Richard M. Gummere, chairman of the Committee on Admissions, said yesterday.

Nine hundred civilian Freshmen will make up the autumn contingent of the class of '51, he disclosed. "With about three and a half candidates competing for every vacancy, the selection was a good bit tougher than usual," Gummere declared.

John U. Monro '34, counsellor for veterans, estimated that there would be 150 new veteran entrants in the class of '51, counting those who began their studies this summer. A class total of 1050 is close to a perwar average, Gummere indicated.
