Harrison Shuts Out Eliot Nine 4-0 To Begin Intramural Competition

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Paced by Bucky Harrison both on the mound and at the plate, the Kirkland-Leverett Deacons opened the summer intramural baseball season yesterday by shutting out a disorganized Eliot nine 4 to 0. The losers will have a chance to avoid the cellar position in the three team league, however, when they meet the Adams-Dunster combination tomorrow.

Although Bill Foster used his curve ball to good advantage, giving up a stingy three hits, he was backed by ragged fielding and his teammates were unable to get hold of Harrison's fast ball. They collected only two hits during the afternoon and indifferent field work figured in all of the Deacons' tallies.

Chip Gannon reached scoring position for the Deacons in the first inning by stealing second after getting on when the Eliot shortstop threw a weakly hit ball into the dirt. Foster then walked Harrison and Gannon scored from second on a single by Hicky. The second Deacon tally followed as Harrison, who had advanced to third on the play, darted home on a passed ball.

Dissatisfied with this slim margin of safety, although he was never in trouble until the last inning, Harrison poled a long fly into left center field. The Eliot fielder misjudged it, and by the time he had retrieved the ball right hander Harrison was well on his way safely home.

Pitches Two-Hitter

The day's scoring was completed when Dick Harrison swung at a pitch that bounced out of reach of the catcher for a dropped third strike and proceeded to second before the ball could be recovered. He then stole home from second on a wild throw.

Only men to hit safely for the Eliot Club were Gilman, who doubled in the first but was picked off by pitcher Harrison, and Farmer in the seventh, who also reached second by means of a steal but died there as Harrison got a strike out, tossed a grounder to third for a force, and compelled a third batter to pop up to end the game.

While Dolph Samborski, Director of Intramural Athletics, is contacting the Law and Business Schools in search of additional teams for league membership, the three clubs now playing will continue to oppose each other.
