House gourmets dreaming of an imminent return to table service faced disillusionment this past week as the University completed installation of permanent, streamlined serving tables in the three dining halls in operation this summer.
Replacement of the "jury-rigs' used in the dining halls to keep food hot for the tray-carrying lines will be placed in the other Houses before the fall term. Eliot, Kirkland, and Lowell now have the new tables.
Labeled the "Edison Hotpoint" system, the newly-installed tables are entirely electrically operated and do not require the extensive plumbing that would go with a permanent steam setup. The temporary tables, put out four years ago when the dining halls first began to follow the G.I. practice, used portable, electric heaters with water-filled pans to give a steam-heated product.
