William M. "Red" Connolly '48, leading Crimson pitcher until his suspension last April, has been reinstated to Ivy League competition, William J. Bingham '16, Director of Athletics, stated last week at the same time Varsity Coach Dolph Samborski was bemoaning the loss by graduation of five first-string players and his two starting hurlers.
Connolly, who had won three games out of four starts and was clearly the ace of the Crimson mound staff, was declared ineligible for intercollegiate competition by an Ivy League committee on April 15 for having "received funds to defray expenses for board and room while participating on a summer baseball team in the League."
Bingham that the pitched was unaware that he was violating Ivy eligibility rules when he performed for the Keene, N. H. nine. At that time, Connolly was enrolled at Holy Cross, which, along with 21 other New England schools, permits its athletes to play in the Northern League, a semi-professional organization.
While gaining Connolly's services, Samborski will lose his infield with the exception of Captain-elect John Coppinger but including catcher Bill Hamlen. Bill Fitz, Jack Forte, Saul Mariaschin, Bill Barron, Jack Wallace, and Brendan Reilly will have to be replaced also.
