Undergraduates will get a votes in the War Memorial debate Thursday when the Student Council distributes 4,000 ballots in the House dining halls, at the Union, and in Dudley Hall asking the College to choose between five proposed memorials or make suggestions of his own.
Thaxter Swan '45 and his extra curricular affairs committee set up their poll as a direct result of a letter published in the Alumni Bulletin suggesting that Leverett Saltonstall's alumni War Memorial Committee "let the veterans decide."
The Council's questionnaire will list as possible choices: 1) student activities center building, 2) music center building, 3) new infirmary, 4) monument, statue, plaque, etc., 5) scholarships. Space will also be available for write-in votes for "other" memorials, and a choice between utilitarian and non-utilitarian memorials.
Backing for Activities Center
Meanwhile undergraduate organizations have been unanimous in their endorsement of the proposed activities center. Swan's committee has sent out to all recognized extracurricular groups an inquiry on facilities now available and a call for complaints.
Many of the 35 activities which have thus far responded, including the American Veterans Committee, the Glee Club, the Liberal Union, the Music Club, and the Network, labeled the House common rooms "inadequate" and indicated a need for office space and anterooms in the proposed center. Only the Advocate, the CRIMSON, and the Lampoon, who have quarters of their own, voiced no request for space.
House Committees Conour
A survey of seven House committees who now dole out meeting space brought complete endorsement of the student activities center, though none of the committees expressed a desire for offices of its own. Dudley Hall's commuter committee has not yet responded to the Council query.
