When the horses go to the post this afternoon at Churchill Downs, Edward R. Hewitt, 2nd '47 will be watching eagerly from the boxes, camera, field glasses, and tip sheet firmly in hand as his father's colt, Phalanx, gets away from the starting gate in its usual leisurely fashion.
An 8-5 favorite last night with the odds shortening hourly, Phalanx captured the Wood Memorial early this season and has since been enthusiastically compared with Whirlaway.
Backs Dad's Horse
Ted Hewitt expects his father's horse to win but warned local track fanciers before he left for Kentucky that Phalanx could easily get pocketed on the first turn if he didn't improve his slow starting form. Discouraged by the short odds and Hewitt's advice, his roommates gave him only two dollars and their good wishes to take along to the green grass country.
Hewitt is 6 feet 5 inches tall, or 21 hands, and usually leaves the jockey chores to Eddie Arcaro, who is somewhat smaller, but he is quite familiar with the sport of kings. In one outing at Suffolk Downs Hewitt picked 15 horses in the money out of 16 races.
