Fifty-eight of the Nation's outstanding high school seniors and recent graduates have been awarded Harvard College National Scholarships the Committee on Scholarships announced yesterday. Also disclosed were the awards of 19 Honorary prize Scholarships, 2 David Kelleher, Jr. Memorial Scholarships, and 83 Harvard College Freshman Scholarships.

Chosen from a field of more than 900 competitors, the National Scholarship winners represent twenty different states. Those awards, established in 1934 as a primary feature of president Conant's program to enhance the cosmopolitanism of the student body, are awarded to men of high intellectual ability and personal promise who have distinguished themselves as leaders in extra-curricular as well as scholastic activities. They were discontinued during the war, but were revived last year.

Eleven for Massachusetts

Massachusetts leads the list of National Scholarships states with 11 awards. With the exception of one for Connecticut, however, no other eastern States are represented. Indiana leads the rest with five recipients, while Missouri, Washington, and Wisconsin have four apiece.

Three awards were made in Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Tennessee; California, Colorado, Ohio, Texas, and Utah received two apiece. The remaining four winners hall from Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, and Oregon.

Two men from Amesbury, Massachusetts, received the Kelleher Memorial Scholarship, awarded for the first time in the memory of a Marine Corns capitan who was killed in action on Tinian. The Kelleher fund is included in the National Scholarship program.

Award of the 19 Honorary prize Scholarships was made to seniors from 10 New England Private Schools. Exeter Academy leads the list with five recipients; St. Marks and Phillips Andover follow with three apiece. Two men from Milton Academy and one apiece from Choate, Loomis, Middlesex, New Preparatory, Pomfret, and Thayer academies round out the list.

Six Awards to Boston Latin School

Massachusetts leads the roster of Freshman Scholarship winners with 35 awards. Of these, 29 go to public school men--six of them from the Boston Public Latin School--and six to private school graduates. New York follows with 24 recipients--16 of them from New York City--while Ohio ranks third with 11, Michigan fourth with 4, and Wisconsin fifth with 3. One apiece go to Iowa, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, Texas, and the District of Columbia.

These awards, like the National Scholarships, may be renewed at the end of the Freshman year, and--subject to the maintenance of honor grades--continued for the duration of the college course. The National awards, moreover, may be extended to cover studies in the graduate and graduate schools.
