College to Offer Swim Course for Red Cross Award

Qualified swimmers may take a two week course beginning today and leading to a Red Cross Senior life saving certificate, Robert J. Maier '48, chief lifeguard instructor, announced yesterday. The course, which at present draws forty students, will feature the latest devices and techniques in life saving.

Maier said that he had just acquired a respirator machine which he plans to demonstrate to his students and any others interested tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 in the Indoor Athletic Building pool. Use of the machine will be taught during the remainder of the course.

The qualifying examination for the Senior life saving certificates will be given on May 9, and any students with prior life guard experience or any advanced swimmers should be able to pass the test if they attend the classes, Maier said.

"Very few students realize that we are giving this course in the College and the importance of such training when swimming emergencies arise," he remarked.
