Members of the Graduate Council representing all University and Radcliffe students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences last night at the Appian Way Club overwhelmingly elected Melvin Richter 1G to be president of the group next year.
George T. McColm 2G was chosen to fill the new post of Director-Treasurer and Richard N. Swift 1G was elected Secretary. The Council at the same time extended a unanimous vote of thanks to Gerald J. Holton 4G for his services as president during the organization's first year of operation.
Committee Heads Selected
Committee chairmen also named at the meeting last night were Florence K. Nierman 2G of the Administrative and Policy Committee, Herbert P. Broida 3G of the Committee on Economic Problems, Frederick C. Brown 2G of the Social Activities Committee, and Andrew E. Rice 1G of the International Students Committee.
The Council next year will be financed from a fund created by an assessment of fifty cents on each student. The greater part of the money, however, will finance the graduate club and other students activities. The newly elected Director-Treasurer will also be manager of the graduate club.
Confronted at present with the task of revamping the current requirements for the Ph.D. degree, the 21-man body expects to make recommendations to the University administrators soon. The Council is also planning to enlarge on the program for foreign students through its International Students Committee.
