While the Senators and the Yankees were being rained out in the opener of the major league season, four House teams battled under lowering skies to inaugurate the House intramural baseball and softball schedules.
Dudley subdued Winthrop by a score of 3 to 2 in a close-fought baseball game and Dunster came out on the long end of a 9 to 5 softball game over Lowell.
Held to a 2-all tie throughout most of the game, the commuters broke the deadlock in the sixth inning to score the winning run. It was the strong defensive work at shortstop of Leo Flynn, only a few days out of his Varsity uniform, that led the Dudley team to victory.
Poor fielding coupled with inadequate hitting downed the Bellboys. Although they scored early and often at the outset of the game, racking up a five-run lead at the end of three innings, they were unable to stem the tide of a five-run rally in the fourth by Dunster, which went on to score two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to put the game on ice.
