Thanks to generous handicaps granted them by coach Mikkola, the unkowns of the Varsity field events corps had their day of glory yesterday as the traditional University Handicap got under way. Running events will be held this afternoon.
As in most handicap meets, the best men didn't always wind up on top; in fact in some events they were shut out completely, when additional inches and feet were added to original efforts of some of the eventual winners.
The summary (including handicaps unless otherwise indicated):
High jump--Won by G. O'Neil; tie for second between G. Hauptfuhrer and O. C. Torrey. Height--6 ft., 5 in.
Broad jump--Won by G. Kumpel; second, E. Garnsey; third R. Reifsnyder. Distance--20 ft., 5 3/4 in.
Pole vault--Won by A. Lockett; second, W. Lawrence; tie for third between O. C. Torrey and F. Chen, Height--13 ft., 7 in.
Shot put (16 lb.) Won by A. Wheeler; second, W. Jackson (scratch); third, J. Fisher. Distance--47 ft., 2 in.
Javelin--Won by D. Trimble; second, J. Holbrook; third E. Kaelher. Dstance--168 ft., 1 1/2 in.
Discus--Won by T. Cameron; second, S. Felton (scratch); third, L. Stobbs. Distance--148 ft., 9 1/2 fa.
Hammer (12 lb.)--Won by H. Reed; second, S. Ward; third, S. Felton (scratch). Distance--175 ft., 2 1/2 in.
