'50 Nine to Face Crimson Jayvees In Season Opener

Coach Warren Berg cut his Freshman baseball squad to 19 players yesterday, as the Yardling nine continued intensive preparations for a 12-game schedule which opens at Soldiers Field Saturday. Lloyd Harper's Jayvees will form the opposition.

The '50 team is bolstered by the presense of several former all-scholastic athletes, as well as a number of players who won their class numerals earlier in the year with the football and basketball squads.

John Hanson, a small left-hander with what Berg calls a "cute style," will be the probable starting pitcher against the Junior Varsity. A Cambridge product, Hanson was selected for the Massachusetts all-scholastic nine last spring when he hurled for Rindge Tech. Cliff Crosby, who played baseball for Berg, is slated to be Hanson's receiver.

Exeter and Basketball

Two Exeter alumni and two former basketball players will make up the Yardling infield. The former Exonians are second-baseman Miles Huntington and third-baseman John Chase, and the sometime basketeers include Frank Lionette, another all-scholastic performer who will be at first base, and Johnny Goldsmith at shortstop.

The outfield includes center-fielder Hal Moffle, who played fullback for Henry Lamar's Freshman eleven last fall; Dick Kobush, another refugee from the basketball team, who will be using his strong right arm from right field, and Frank Glimp, whom Berg terms his "best all-around ballplayer," in left field.

Today the Yardlings will hold a practice game with the Varsity at 3:30 o'clock, after getting in some batting practice starting at 1:30 o'clock.
