Spring Football Candidates Begin Practice With Two-Hour Workout in Briggs Cage

Harlow Not Present as More Than 60 Players Turn Up to Try for Positions on Squad

With baseball, track, and hour exams offering stiff competition, upwards of three-score spring football candidates kicked up the dust in Briggs Cage for two hours yesterday afternoon in the College's first preview of next fall's pigskin parade.

Dick Harlow will not make his appearance till the end of the week, when he is expected back from the Duke University Hospital at Durham, North Carolina, where his treatments for high blood pressure have been reported as successful.

In his absence, Freshman coach Henry Lamar and line coach Hal Kopf bellowed the orders of the day, while sharing the authority were Chief Boston, Harry Jacunski, and Bob Margarita, Jayvee, end, and backfield mentors respectively.

Taking over the entire cage at 4:30 o'clock, and thereby moving Freshman baseball practice up to an earlier hour, the gridders ran through preliminary exercises and signal drill.

Present from last year's Varsity were backfield flash Chip Gannon, second-string center Chuck Glynn, and end John Fiorentino, while heading the list of former Freshmen were last fall's guard and captain Dick Guidera and back Hal Moffie. Following by two days Saturday's heated court battle at the Arena, Bill Brady was running through plays with the backfield candidates.

This showing represents only a fraction of last year's talent that Dick Harlow will have to work with again next fall. Filling the all-important quarterback slot and finding a replacement for graduating center Jack Fisher will present the major problems in shaping a team that presently appears well stocked in the other positions.

Spring practice is scheduled to run five weeks, three of them after the coming holidays, while only the weather will determine when activities will be moved out of doors.
