Dartmouth's star-studded hockey team swept past Yale 5 to 2 last night at the Boston Arena before a near-capacity crowd. In gaining top Pentagonal League honors and the right to face Toronto next Tuesday on the same rink in the international playoffs, the Big Green iced upwards of 20 skaters, any six of whom could probably have disposed of the opposition successfully.
Yale nevertheless kept the crowd in a frenzy by remaining within striking distance for most of the route. Their inspired play was led by blond-haired Fred Pearson, when he was not languishing in the penalty box.
Two factors kept the score down. Dartmouth adopted a conservative three-man attack after leading 2 to 1 in the opening period, and the Indians sought too often to travel the glory road alone. High point of the Green's solo onslaughts saw Bruce Mather converge on five Elis while both his line-mates were off on penalties. After an extended scrimmage in front of the Bulldog nets, which was climaxed by a Mather shot at the goal that nearly connected, Yale finally succeeded in clearing the puck.
Blue goalie Terry Van Ingen was his usual remarkable self.
