Yardling Mermen Take Elis, 43-32

Yardling backstroker Tom Woods emulated his Yale varsity counterpart, Allen Stack, in the earlier Freshman meet last Saturday evening, as he led his teammates to a 43 to 32 triumph over the Yale yearlings.

Woods took the opening gun of a 300-yard medley outfit that set a new mark with 3:12.1. His 1:44.8 for the 150-yard distance took a fraction of a second off the best of Bob Drucker, made in 1940.

Joe Fox and Paul Killoran were also instrumental in the upset, Fox taking first in the 50, Killoran in the 100, and both doing yeoman service in the final crucial 400-yard freestyle relay. Only other Crimson winner was Larry Ward, who left the rest behind in the 200-yard breast stroke.

The relay foursome of Fox, Killoran, All Weatherhead, and especially a burst by Art Sicular on the last leg, edged the Eli's more on start and precision than on open speed.
