Music-making sports fans registering today will have an opportunity to join the University Band this term, Walter J. Skinner, Band manager, has announced.
Termed the "best collegiate band in the East" by the New Yorker magazine, the College unit, under the baton of Malcolm H. Holmes '28, Dean of the New England Conservatory of Music, and expert drill-master Guy V. Slade '32, last fall again graced the half-time intermissions in Soldiers Field.
With marches through the Square, football rallies, and invasions of Princeton and Dartmouth with the Varsity eleven, the band regained its place on the college scene.
Record Album
Following the football season, the group recorded the "Ivy League Album," a collection of well-known college songs, marches and medleys. According to Skinner, further recordings may be forthcoming although no titles have been decided upon.
Winter sports events have not been
neglected by the musicians this year as basketball and hockey fans have heard the strains of "Harvardiana" and Winter-green" echo over the Garden boards and the Arena ice. For the remainder of the season the band will support the teams, Skinner announced.
Later in the spring Skinner plans to lead the group on "extended tours," but as yet no definite arrangements have been made.
Auditions for men desiring to join this term will be held at Paine Music Building this evening, and the first rehearsal to include the new musicians will be at Sanders Theatre on Wednesday afternoon. Anticipating a plethora of aspirants next fall, Skinner warns that "the best way to get into the band for the football season is to get in now.
