Upper New York State grappling did not agree too well with the Crimson Varsity wrestling team as it lost a rough 25 to 3 match to a Syracuse powerhouse on foreign soil Friday evening, and the next day proceeded to drop a close 16 to 14 match to the Big Red of Cornell at Ithaca.
Friday's match with the Orangemen saw 145-pounder Dan Ray win the only bout for the Varsity by taking a 6 to 2 decision from Al Caperna. Bill Bluemel and Pete Knox both dropped decision in the 121 and 128 pound classes respectively, while at 136 Frank Trinkle lost a close bout to Charles Smith.
In the 155-pound class, Arnold Zellner lost by a fall to Charles Moore of Syracuse in 2:47 of the first period as captain Don Louria dropped a 9 to 5 decision to Orange George Vohden. Bob Claflin was pinned in 8:47 of the third period by George Gebhart. In the unlimited bout, captain Bob Pickett of the boys from Syracuse decisioned Pete Fuller 2 to 1, in a rugged set-to.
Crimson Outmauled, 2 to 1
Although both the Big Red and the Crimson took four bouts in the Ithaca meet, Cornell pulled out the victory.
Frank Trinkle won the first bout for the Crimson in the 136-pound class where he pinned Doug Orner in 56 seconds of the third period. Dan Ray followed him by taking the 145-pound honors with a 2 to 1 decision over Jack Adams.
Don Louria came back from his Syracuse loss to decision Fred Reeve of the Ithacans by a 2 to 0 count, while Fuller did the same to take the heavyweight bout from Bob Clark of Cornell. Wrestling in the 121-pound bracket, Bluemel was pinned in 1:28 of the first period with a body press and half nelson. Knox, a 128-pounder, dropped a decision to John Calby.
The 155-pound class was taken by the Cornell captain Almquist, by a fall over Zellner in 6:51, and Bob Claflin lost a close decision to Al Laszlo of the Big Red at 1:75.
