Student opinion on wheat saving for Europe will be tested in a sample poll scheduled to circulate in the dining halls of the entire University at lunchtime today, John K. Lally '49, chairman of the Student Council sub-committee on food, announced last night. Winthrop House beat the opening gun by starting its poll at noon yesterday.
Vice-President Reynolds and Business Manager Aldrich Durant '02 have declared that they will cut down the amount of bread served if the results indicate student backing of the plan.
Three Questions
Supported not only by the Student Council, but also by the Graduate Advisory Council and the Business School Student Association, the poll will ask three questions: Do you favor (1) No bread or rolls one meal per day and if so, at which meal; (2) Pio one day less per week; (3) No wheat cereals three days per week?
Saving on the first question would amass 1600 pounds of flour a week, while conservation under the second would secure 400 pounds. No figures on the saving in the third were available, according to Lally.
He added that under the set-up of the proposed plan, the average student would suffer no lack of food, but would only "substitute" something else "less desperately needed." "The wheat thus saved will be released for government purchase and shipment abroad."
Partial Solution
The entire measure is only one-half of an original plan which would have allotted the money saved on wheat to the buying of C.A.R.E. parcels for overseas, said Lally.
This idea met the disapproval of Reynolds and Durant, who argued that a loss of money both by the University and by students would occur.
Though the first to reach the College, the poll is the fourth drawn up: three others were veteed by the Council.
