Flier of Harvard Communist 'Branch' Spawns Confusion

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Bewilderment swept State Communist and University circles yesterday ever the actual sponsorship of a leaflet "Issued by the Square area Monday and Tuesday. Entitled "Operation Guillotine," the sheet attacked and called for "the abolition of the House Un-American Committee."

Students active in College political organizations stated that they were unaware of the existence of any official Communist Party chapter in the University, and Associate Dean Watson declared last night that "definitely no" such organization is recognized by the College.

A spokesman at Communist State headquarters in Boston professed ignorance of the flier, asserting that he was not in charge of the Party's college movement. The office's Boylston Street address was the same one listed for the "Student Branch" in the hand-bill.

Miss Barbara Bennett, regional director of Communist youth activities, stated that the document came from "Party members at Harvard," who have been issuing publications "for many, many years."

Purpose of the House Committee's recent investigations of Communist activity, the leaflet contends, was to give "Fascism free reign to develop while the public's attention is diverted.
