Control, Speed Mark Upset Against Tufts

By William S. Fairfield

Control was the secret Saturday night as Bill Barclay's varsity basketball team staged a rapid-fire second half rally to defeat Tufts 53 to 42 before a sardinepacked, highly partisan through at consens Gymnasium, Medford.

With Steve Davin, George Hauptfuhrer, and Bill Prior providing the height necessary to control the backboards and Chip Gannon holding Jumbo scoring ace Spud Shapire to five points, the Crimson bounced back to rack up its third win in four starts after trailing 24 to 29 shortly after the start of the second half.

Offense Distributed

Most encouraging sign of the evening was the well-distributed share in the final tally contributed by other than John Rockwell and Captain Hauptfuhrer. While Hauptfuhrer led the Crimson attack with 16 points, Prier, Bill Henry, and Gannon all had a strong hand in the victory.

After missing its first nine tries from the floor in the second half, the varsity finally knotted the count at 30-all with 15 minutes to play, when Hauptfuhrer hawked a pair of short deuces sandwiching Brady's two charity tosses.

The phychological break of the game came at that time, when Hauptfuhrer went up for a rebound with three Tufts men, inadvertently knocking out captain Bob Cooney in the struggle for the ball. The ensuing "boo" inspired the wrong team, as the Crimson surged ahead, sparked by Prior and Hauptfuhrer.

The summary:   FG  FT  P Davis, rf  0  0  0 Rockwell  0  0  0 Prior  4  1  9 Brady, lf  3  5  11 Crosby  2  0  4 Hauptfuhrer, c  8  0  16 Tomsovic  0  0  0 Henry, rg  4  0  8 Gannon, lg  2  1  5 Total  23  7  53
