Operation two in the 1947-48 Crimson track show began officially at the Varsity Club last night when close to 100 runners, jumpers, and weightmen assembled to hear Coach Mikkola outline plans for the winter season. Pen Hallowell '32, University indoor mile champion, was the guest speaker.
Mikkola, hopeful that the new campaign would produce a happier story than the cross country opener, predicted considerable vitality in some of the jumping and weight-throwing events, but admitted that "we may be a little weak in the distances, sprints and hurdles."
New Briggs Cage Skylight
Although the vault and high-jump pits at Briggs haven't been cushioned with sawdust yet, the rest of the place shows the signs of repair work done last summer.
Insuring snug conditions in the wettest weather is a brand new $20,000 skylight, which looks down onto the newly-installed Oregon pine balcony saucer.
With the first competition slightly over two weeks away, Coach Mikkola will begin sifting his Varsity and Freshman material this week. Time trials have been scheduled for Saturday.
