Jayvees, Freshmen Nudge Over Eli; Booter Outfits Held to Slim Defeat

Two goals were just one too many twice for the brace of soccer teams which mot Yale Friday afternoon, as both Varsity and Freshmen went down to defeat 2 to 1. Both Crimson outfits were battling to preserve excellent records as well as roll over their biggest opponent, with Coach MacDonald's men defending their best slate in nine years.

For both Crimson teams it was also the second defeat of the year. In the case of the Varsity, they were almost taken by surprise as the Eli booters punched one through the cage in the first three minutes of action.

After Blue forward Jack Calkins had scored the normal aggressiveness of the Cantab rugby-footballers waned temporarily. A fleeting spark of the form they displayed against a smooth Princeton bunch returned five minutes later as outer Bill Dawson bounced a high pass to John Spivak, who headed it into the opposition ball basket.

Olympic Tryouts

Some consolation to the Crimson team yesterday was the disclosure that three of their number had been invited to try out for the Olympic tryouts. Fullback Tom Burrowes was the only man to head west after the loss, however, as the two others, fullback Mike Scully and forward Bill Potterfi returned north to Cambridge.

Despite the fact that Spivak was ignored by the Olympic planners, he was undoubtedly the most potent Crimson man on the varsity field, and was instrumental in arousing hopes of a comeback late in the fourth quarter which just missed materializing at the closing whistle.

Bulldog pup Chuck Shaugnessey dominated the Freshman field a couple of hundred yards away, as he led his mates to the 2 to 1 triumph. Joe Wogan scored the sole tally for the Crimson as the Freshman booters broke a five game winning streak.
