Spirited Practices Prime Freshmen for Traditional Eli Tilt

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

With a week of some of the most enthusiastic practice sessions of the year under their helmets and pads, 35 Yardling footballers shove off for Eliland this morning willing and hoping to cap their grid season with a victory over the Yale Freshmen this afternoon.

On paper, the Yardlings hold a slight edge that means less than nothing in the traditional series. Coach Lamar's team defeated a Brown squad that eked out a 6 to 3 win over the Cubs. The Yale Freshmen, however, have a potent eleven that blasted their first four opponents for 88 points while keeping their own goal line inviolate.

All Starters Set

But if there ever was a team out to win, the Yarlings are it. The return of guards Peto Coyne and Bill Rosenau from the injury list this week brings the squad to full strength for the crucial encounter.

Lamar ran his gridders through defenses against Yale plays this week and worked out some new strategy to baffle the Eli defenders. Even in dummy drills the Freshmen were blocking hard and the thump of shoulder pad against canvas could almost be heard in Connecticut.

Three deep in every position, the Yardlings will rely heavily on the hard running of halfbacks Carl Bottenfield and John West the passing and ball handling of Jim Lowell, the speed of John White, and a crowd of non-starters who play as much and as good football as the first string.
